Customer Profile
In its 100th year of business, The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association (OMA), Columbus, Ohio, works to make sure Ohio’s manufacturers retain competitiveness. Its mission is to protect and grow manufacturing in Ohio. It has a membership of 1,500 manufacturing firms throughout the state. The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association has been using Six Disciplines for two years.

The Problem
Operating in an environment where opportunities emerge and fade quickly, The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association experienced problems managing the deployment of resources to seize new opportunities while maintaining high standards for its ongoing operations, in an environment of rapid change. OMA needed a process to manage resources in real time while it maintained focus on the daily work, without straining the organization.

The Solution
Six Disciplines provides The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association with the tool set to resolve resource constraints and set priorities. The keys for OMA are the Six Disciplines system’s ease of use for each manager, the ability to establish accountability on each initiative, and the ability to monitor progress in a timely manner as a team.

The Benefits
The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association continues to realize the following benefits from using Six Disciplines:
  • Improved strategic planning – Six Disciplines provides a framework in which a conversation about the strategy and trajectory of the business can occur.
  • Development of accountability – all key staff have an Individual Plan which he or she uses to direct individual work. Now, all work, and progress on the work, is written down and visible.
  • More accurate capacity planning – through the exercise of assigning hours to each task, each person knows what new work that they can take on while keeping the day-to-day business going. Therefore, each staff member does a better job of accepting new work while balancing existing activities.
  • Targeted execution on the plan – tasks are generally completed on time that may have previously lagged for lack of rigor. Weekly accountability makes the staff think about every aspect of their jobs.

What The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association has to say about Six Disciplines

“Over time, we’ve adopted and adapted several different management systems. Six Disciplines has been by far the simplest to use, most readily accepted by our managers, and most effective in aligning accountabilities for performance. We are getting better and better as we learn the tools together, and feel that we’ve just scratched the surface of what we’ll be able to do together as a management team.”  ~ Eric Burkland, President, OMA
